St James Station

JULY 17, 2017

Preservation of past buildings is wonderful when the building is attractively designed and the structure is sound. St James Station is a good example. The conveniently located St James Station on Hyde Park in Sydney’s Midtown is heritage listed. It was built in 1926 and is an example of Inter War Stripped Classical architecture. The Chateau Tanunda Brandy neon signage at the Elizabeth street entrance is a late 1930’s promotion. The brandy is still available today and retails at Dan Murphy’s for $38. Adding to the appeal of this landmark is the retention of other signage in the tunnels and that the station is on the city circle which provides direct transportation to Sydney airport. In fact the route to Sydney Domestic Airport costs $17 and takes almost exactly 13 minutes, which makes it the most time efficient way to make it to your flight. With the rise in Sydney’s traffic and the expense of driving services, effective public transport services such as this are indisputably the way to go.

When I travel, I choose to catch the train from St James Station and return here, not just because of the proximity to our city offices and efficiency of the service but because it enables me to get a quick taste of Sydney’s history.
